Caramelized Onions in the Crock Pot

Jump to recipe

Caramelized onions were never so easy. Don’t get us wrong, there is something deeply satisfying cooking onions on low and slow over the stove while watching them turn into rich brown caramelized onions, but when you need to accomplish a gazillion other things, the crock pot is definitely the way to go. Easy Peasy and unbelievable tasty!

So, I was not focused this day (because I had to accomplish a gazillion other things) so I was not diligent with capturing the moments. (Just this once I can’t blame Julie!)

I promise the very next time I caramelize onions this way, I will take more pictures and update the post.

You will have to use your imagination on the ingredients because I failed to capture with my camera.  All that is needed is right around 5 pounds of yellow onions, melted butter and salt to make these. Some cooks choose to add balsamic vinegar and or Worcestershire sauce, bay leaf etc., but we chose to go au natural.

Slice onions thinly and place in a crock pot. Pour 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) over the top of the onions. Add salt, set your slow cooker on low and place the cover on – yep, it’s that simple, really.

We can’t lie, we did peek 2 to 3 times during cooking and gave the onions a quick stir. At the 10-hour mark, there was quite a bit of liquid in the bottom of the crock pot. I removed some of the liquid with a spoon. (I saved the fluid in the fridge in the hopes of making a delicious french onion soup even if I have to freeze.

I tilted the lid a little bit so steam could release and continued to cook on low an additional 4 hours. Wouldn’t it have been nice if I stopped to take a couple of progress pics along the way? Well, I was a big fat failure on this day. Sorry to let you down.

Here is the end result. I did manage to get a picture prior to using these babies up in every way we could think of. Will post the recipes as soon as we can.
